The New Economy Institute - Helping Local Industries Produce High-tech Products- Dr. Greg Sedrick

THE NEW ECONOMY INSTITUTE (NEI) is a federally funded regional economic development organization established to assist businesses in the application of new technology.  NEI will operate in a corridor from southwest Virginia through east Tennessee and into northern Alabama as far as Huntsville and Decatur.  NEI is a joint effort of Chattanooga State Technical Community College and the Southeast Development and Resource District.

Dr. Greg Sedrick, Director of the NEI, says they intend to overcome gaps in traditional economic development, the most important gap being between education and work performance.  They will catalog advanced technical resources available within the region and serve as a clearing house to make resources available to businesses.  In addition to coordinating the needs of businesses, state, and federal employers with training and expertise already available in the region, Dr. Sedrick says, the NEI will help new and existing businesses develop new products using advanced technology.  They will also encourage technical and scientific education at all levels in order to raise the technical competence in the entire region.
