The Next Generation Orbiting Space Telescope - Vince Huegele, NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center

You've been there before...as a child (and even now) you look up into the clear night sky and can't help but wonder what is out there that we haven't discovered yet.  Recently, the Hubble telescope has brought that clear night sky a whole lot closer.  The Hubble telescope has been responsible for showing us colorful breathtaking images of celestial bodies deep in space.  But what you may not hear so much about is the Chandra space telescope.  This telescope operates within an X-Ray spectrum to find what other optical telescopes like the Hubble can't see, black holes.  Vince Huegele from NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center will give us a presentation on the next generation orbiting space telescope the "James Webb Space Telescope."  This space telescope is so powerful, it's main purpose is to find and study the "edge" of the universe.  If you've ever wondered what's out there, this presentation will be an introduction into how mankind intends to find out.

Invocation Chairperson for July:  Ron Burton

Menu: Lasagna, Tossed Salad, Steamed Vegetable Medley, Crowder Peas, and Apple Cobbler

OUR PREVIOUS MEETING_______________________________________

Jan Griffin and Jack Lewis conducted tours in two groups for about 18 Chattanooga Engineers Club members and guests.  We had at least six guests.  Jan Griffin explained the NRC training center mission and how it related to the NRC’s areas of responsibilities.  In 1980, the training center was located in Chattanooga to be in close proximity to TVA’s nuclear control room simulators.  In 1986, the NRC installed their first nuclear control room simulator in the building behind Eastgate (address below).  They now have at least 4 simulators, 30 NRC employees, and 4 contractors at this site.

Address:

U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission
Technical Training Center
Osborne Office Center
5746 Marlin Road, Suite 200
Chattanooga, TN 37411-5677

Those attending heard that the NRC does not train utility personnel.  They provide tests for licensing utility operators and train inspectors from all over the world.  They also provide training on handling radioactive materials in the medical and transportation industries.  Those touring heard the difference between the fuel rod movement in a Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) design and a Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) design.  They heard how control rods can be used to slow heat build up inside the core.  Some witnessed a simulation of a Sudden Control Rod Automatic Movement (SCRAM) that can occur when cooling water flow is interrupted to the core of a BWR design.
