Topic: Supercomputers - Their Design,
Application and Future - Dr. Thomas Zacharia, ORNL
Dr. Thomas Zacharia will describe what supercomputers are, how
they work and differ form our everyday PCs, their history, why they are
needed, how they have been used in the past, their current application, and what
is on the drawing board for creating still more powerful computers. He will also
describe ORNL's role in the development and application of these supercomputers.
Dr. Zacharia is the Director of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory's
Computational Science Laboratory.

Vince Huegele gave us an interesting presentation on the
current and next generation of orbiting space telescopes. Vince is an engineer
with the NASA Marshall Spacer Flight Center and has been working in optics
research for the past 22 years. He said that the James Webb Space
Telescope (JWST) is scheduled for launch in 2011. It
is a six meter telescope that will replace the current Hubble.
The contractor for the manufacture of the JWST has just been selected.
Plans call for the use existing rocket design to launch this instrument
into an L2 orbit - a locations between the earth and the moon where net
gravity forces are zero. This will be further into space than the current
shuttle can reach. The design of the telescope and associated equipment
needs to light-weight and collapsible for the transport.

Unless we note
otherwise, all of our presentation meetings are held at the Cellar Restaurant in
the Tallan Building, Union Square, Downtown Chattanooga from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m.
Out meeting room and luncheon service are open by 11:30 a.m. Lunch buffet is
$10.00 per person (inclusive). No reservation is required. Free parking is
available in the Days Inn Motel (on Carter Street and MLK Blvd.) courtesy of the
Days Inn management. When you park there, be sure to place a note on your
dashboard indicating you are attending the Engineers Club meeting.
