OUR PREVIOUS MEETING_______________________________________
Vince Huegele gave us an interesting presentation on the current and next generation of orbiting space telescopes. Vince is an engineer with the NASA Marshall Spacer Flight Center and has been working in optics research for the past 22 years.  He said that the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is scheduled for launch in 2011.  It is a six meter telescope that will replace the current Hubble.  The contractor for the manufacture of the JWST has just been selected.  Plans call for the use existing rocket design to launch this instrument into an L2 orbit - a locations between the earth and the moon where net gravity forces are zero.  This will be further into space than the current shuttle can reach.  The design of the telescope and associated equipment needs to light-weight and collapsible for the transport.
