Monday, July 21 - noon
Cellar Restaurant, Downtown

Topic:  Managing the Flood of 2003 - Greg Lowe, TVA's Reservoir Operations

Haven't you thrown away those old muddy sneakers that are still in the basement?  I'm referring to that pair that you got all muddy during the Flood of 2003 a few months ago.  For some, the rising water surge meant they simply lost a pair of sneakers, for others it was a lot worse.  Rising waters can be devastating to communities and families but here in the Tennessee Valley we have a special group of folks watching out for rising water levels.  Greg Lowe, the Senior Manager of TVA's River Scheduling group will tell us how TVA's system of 49 dams works as a unified system to provide flood control, navigation, power generation, recreation, and water quality.  Balancing and optimizing competing and often conflicting demands on the river system involves a complex operation.  One of the primary objectives of the integrated river system is to minimize flood damages.  The May 2003 flood will be used to demonstrate TVA's flood control efforts to minimize damage to Chattanooga during major flood events.
