IMPORTANT NOTICE:
WHERE WE MEET THIS MONDAY (AND THE REST OF August) ____________

We will be meeting for the next couple weeks at the Read House in downtown Chattanooga on a trial basis.  We would like to get a feel for the location, meeting room, and the quality of food.  As the meetings occur we would be interested in your comments about this location.  We will continue to park at the Days Inn on Carter Street (being sure to leave a notice on your dashboard).  A map showing the location of the Read House may be found at http://www.ChattanoogaEngineersClub.org/ReadHouse.gif .  If you know of any individuals who do not readily receive this email or are not frequent attenders, please help us out by forwarding this email or contacting these individuals by phone.

NEXT WEEK_________________________________________________
Monday, August 18 - noon

Topic:  The International Space Station - Lanny Upton, NASA (MSFC)

The International Space Station is the largest and most complex international scientific project in history. The station represents a move of unprecedented scale off the home planet that began in 1998 with the launch of the first two components, the Unity and Zarya modules. Led by the United States, the International Space Station draws upon the scientific and technological resources of 16 nations: Canada, Japan, Russia, 11 nations of the European Space Agency and Brazil.  Lanny Upton from Nasa's Marshall Space Flight Center will present an overview of the International Space Station.  He will discuss Marshall Space Flight Center's role in making this complex international scientific project a reality.  Although many of us have seen the Space Station from earth, most of us do not know much of what goes on inside to keep this home away from home orbiting the earth.

Invocation/Pledge:  Brad Baucom

OUR PREVIOUS MEETING_______________________________________

Mark Downing, who is from ORNL’s Environmental Science Division, has been working for about ten years to knock down technical and economic barriers to co-firing biomass with coal.  Some biomass being considered is switch grass (grows fast) and hybrid poplar trees (10 year growing cycle).  A good first step is to encourage agreements between farmers and electricity providers for joint projects.  In his opinion, half ownership of the power plant between the utility and the group of farmers is recommended.  Also, half ownership of the plant to process the biomass into tiny particles is recommended.  The chopped up biomass will be blown with air into the boiler.  Co-firing biomass has the potential to reduce NOx and SO2 emissions from power plants.
