Topic: The Soldier of the Future
- Gen. George Fisher Jr., National
Security Directorate, Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
The soldier of the future will be equipped with an array
of high tech devises that are designed to
improve his or her combat capabilities and chances of survival. For example, soldiers will be
outfitted with lightweight body armor that
can monitor heart rate, body temperature, and respiration. Based on this information, the armor
will begin attending wounds. For example, the fibers may close to block out
chemical agents or stiffen to form a
splint or cast for a broken bone. Helmets will carry cutting-edge technology, including tiny, digital cameras to
spot enemies in the dark or
undergrowth. General George
Fisher Jr., National Security Directorate at Oak
Ridge National Laboratory, will describe these and other devices that his laboratory is helping develop.
OUR PREVIOUS
MEETING_______________________________________
Dr. Phil Kazemersky, Dr. Jim Cunningham, and Dr. Cecelia
Wigal led about 20 members and guests through the new Engineering, Math, and
Computer Science Building at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga on
September 29.
It’s huge. It’s fabulous. It’s open and
classes are being held there.
If you missed the tour,
you have another chance to see the building and meet some of the students
at Horizon, a UTC Engineering & Science Festival to be held on October
9. The Horizon website is: http://oneweb.utc.edu/~horizon/index.htm
Please volunteer to help the engineering students at one
of the displays outside the library on October 9 by emailing them your name,
contact information, and the starting and ending times you might be available to
help: horizon@utc.edu
