NEXT WEEK_______________________________________________

Monday, February 2, noon, Read House - Continental Room

Topic: "The U.S. Green Building Council and an Overview of the LEED Rating System" - Sara Hedstrom, Carol R. Johnson Associates, Inc.

Sara Hedstrom will give a presentation that introduces the US Green Building Council, talks about the benefits of green building, and provide an overview of the LEED Rating System.  The U.S. Green Building Council is the nation's foremost coalition of leaders from across the building industry working to promote buildings that are environmentally responsible, profitable and healthy places to live and work.

OUR PREVIOUS MEETING____________________________________

Topic: "Spallation Neutron Source" - Dr. Lee Magid, Acting Director of the University of Tennessee/Oak Ridge National Laboratory Joint Institute for Neutron Sciences

When completed, the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) facility, located at ORNL, will be the largest pulsed spallation source facility in the world and will be used for research on neutron scattering.  Dr. Magid presented PowerPoint slides showing the SNS facility under construction.  The facility will have its own substation.  The first instrumentation will go on-line in 2007 with all instruments to be on-line in 2012.   Some Chattanooga contractors have been involved in various construction phases such as the installation of the fire alarm system and plant specific variable frequency drives.

Some of the research areas that will benefit from neutron sources provided at SNS are magnetism and superconductivity, complex fluids, biomaterials, polymers, crystalline materials, disordered materials, semiconductors, and engineered structures.

The SNS will have a significant economic impact on the state and region.  Construction costs alone account for more than $1.4 billion.  The annual operating budget is estimated at $150 million.  The need for more scientists and engineers will increase in the region.

Our thanks to Jim Barrott for the meeting summary.
