NEXT WEEK_______________________________________________

Monday, February 9, noon, Read House - Continental Room

Topic: "Update on Oak Ridge Technology Transfer" - Dr. Terry Payne, P.E., Director of the Economic Development Program at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL)

Since UT-Battelle became the operating contractor at ORNL three years ago, many changes have taken place.  One of the communities seeking to capitalize on the fact that the location of the nations largest energy science lab is in East Tennessee is Chattanooga.  In the past 3 years, we have seen the opening of Chattanooga Center for Entrepreneurial Growth, extensive interaction in the recruitment of industry to Chattanooga, partnerships on Tennessee Valley Economic Summits, and many other exciting activities.  Dr. Payne will give us an update on facilities modernization, strategic research areas, effects of 9/11, technology transfer and economic development success stories.

OUR PREVIOUS MEETING____________________________________

Topic: "The U.S. Green Building Council and an Overview of the LEED Rating System" - Don Horton of McCarty Holsaple McCarty Architects & Interior Designers and Sara Hedstrom, Carol R. Johnson Associates, Inc.

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is a non-profit organization based in Washington D.C. that developed the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system for green buildings certification.  Their five primary goals are to promote: 1) sustainable site planning, 2) safe water and water conservation, 3) energy efficiency, 4) conservation of materials, and 5) air quality and control.  Through their efforts they hope to provide environmental benefits, economic benefits, health benefits, and community benefits.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a certification process with many goals and characteristics including prevention of “greenwashing” which means prevention of false and exaggerated claims by vendors and businesses concerning green products and services and recognition of leaders in the green industry.

Those wanting support and more information can contact the USGBC at www.usgbc.org or by contacting the East Tennessee organization of USGBC.

Our thanks to Jim Barrott for the meeting summary.
