OUR PREVIOUS MEETING________________________________________________

Topic:  “New Technologies in PET/CT Scans” - Carlyle Reynolds, R&D Engineer, CPS Innovations

Mr. Reynolds provided an overview of PET and PET/CT scanning machines and how a typical PET/CT scan is done from a patient’s perspective.  He discussed the technical aspects of PET electronics and provided some insight on how this technology will change the future of healthcare.  The PET scanner looks for a radioactive material in a glucose base injected into the patient to be in larger concentrations in cells that are more active and requiring more nutrients.  The heart, brain, and kidneys are natural “hot spots” in a PET scan because those areas attract and use nutrients at a high rate.  Malignant tumors and mending bones also appear as hot spots on a PET scan.  The PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scan is used to map processes in the body.  Combined with the CT (Computed Tomography), the location of hot spots seen in the PET can be more easily pinpointed by a radiologist who interprets the CT scan output.  Combining CT with PET scanning may provide a more complete picture of a tumor’s location and growth or spread than either test alone.

Thanks to Jim Barrott and Judy Driggans for the meeting summary.

EMAIL NOTIFICATIONS__________________________________________________

The Chattanooga Engineers Club would like to begin allowing recipients of this email newsletter to have control over their account.  What this means is that you will be in charge of changing information about your email address as you see fit.  If you would like to start using another email address for these bulletins, you will need to subscribe a new email address and unsubscribe your old one.  The email server will be instructed to send out a password reminder email to each recipient.  We will send out monthly password reminders for approximately three months.  This email will contain instructions on how to log on and change your password (if you want).  This allows you to administer your own email account, and allows you to set a few preferences as well.

WHERE WE MEET _______________________________________________________

For the May 3 meeting, we will meet at The Read House, and lunch will be $10.  Parking is free at the Days Inn across MLK Blvd. but you’ll need a note in your windshield that you’re with the Engineers’ Club.  Valet parking (by AAA, the manager of the Read House Hotel parking garage) is $3 for lunch events.  The Read House Hotel garage entrance is now on Broad Street.  We hope to have our meeting location settled down very soon.  We thank you for your patience.
