NEXT WEEK __________________________________________________________
Monday, June 7, “The Tennessee Lottery and Educational Funding” – Gail Campbell, Lottery Scholarship Coordinator, UTC
Many of our local high schools have recently had their graduation ceremonies where scholarships were awarded. Many graduates were receiving the new Tennessee HOPE scholarship. Is HOPE the only financial assistance available through the Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarship for those wanting to pursue higher education? Gail Campbell, the Lottery Scholarship Coordinator at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, plans to give us the facts about what is available and answer our questions. Some questions may be: Is my teen eligible? Yes, if they graduated from high school in June of 2003 or 2004. Am I eligible? Probably not, unless you just graduated from high school. How much might be available? It depends on the student’s grades and test scores, the parent’s income, and the school they plan to attend. What must be done to keep or maintain the scholarship? How will the funds arrive in the student’s account at the school?
If the question you want answered about the Tennessee HOPE scholarship does not appear above, this is a wonderful opportunity to make plans to attend our meeting on Monday and find out everything you need to know about the Tennessee HOPE scholarship.
Invocation/Pledge Chair for June: Jack Wagner
OUR PREVIOUS MEETING________________________________________________
Topic: “Adobe Acrobat to Set Up Knowledge Base Networks for Manufacturing Environments” - Chris Carson, Environmental and Safety Engineer, Mueller Co.
Tom Carson introduced Chris Carson, our speaker from Mueller. They aren’t related, but they have worked on similar projects. Tom spoke a couple weeks ago at a CEC meeting with Dr. Sedrick about using Adobe Acrobat software for storing and retrieving data from a variety of sources. Chris Carson enthusiastically showed us what Mueller has included in pdf files and how the Adobe software can make access and updates easy for users. The Adobe distiller software can cost $300 to $500 per copy and it converts files from many different sources into pdf (Portable Document Format) files. Some scanners now offer output in a pdf format that eliminates the extra conversion step. The pdf reader software is free and can be downloaded from the Internet. The Adobe software security allows for limited access to be given to users with passwords depending on their need and use of the information. Once scanned into the pdf format, documents can be given links to other documents connecting the people accessing the information quickly to every document they may need to do their job. For more information about the Adobe software see http://www.adobe.com.
The Mueller Company in Chattanooga, a manufacturer of water valves for water handling requirements, operates its own foundry for casting iron bodies and consequently maintains many environmental permits. In addition to maintaining their environmental permits, Mueller has added to the Adobe system their ISO (International Organization for Standardization) procedures, emergency procedures, human resource information, and drawings of all their products. Many of their workers are from unions. They have documented the tasks that need to be done and even included links to video that show new employees how to make a product.
To protect the data, Mueller has a server off site that mirrors the server at the plant. Every night, the server information is recorded on optical disks that are taken to another location. For more information about Mueller Company see http://www.muellercompany.com.
Thanks to Judy Driggans for the meeting summary.
