Topic:   “NASA's Vision for Space Exploration” - Roy Priest, Marshall Space Flight Center

Have you ever thought about having a job in space?  I mean, really out in space?  Although it may sound “out there,” it may be a real option for your children or grandchildren.  Our objectives in space have been radically transformed - a return to the Moon, missions to Mars, and beyond.  Mr. Roy Priest will discuss NASA's new Vision for Space Exploration and how a successfully implemented vision will create a sustained capability in space for the nation.

Menu:  Grilled Chicken Breast with Chef's Sauce, Rice Pilaf, Vegetable of the Day

OUR PREVIOUS MEETING________________________________________________

Topic:   Getting the ‘tech’ out there:  “The Oak Ridge Public Tour” - Fred Strohl, Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Mr. Strohl is responsible for the ORNL Speakers Bureau which coordinates technical speakers for the CEC.  He spoke of the Oak Ridge Department of Energy facilities tour that has been offered to the public since 1995.  During that time, more than 32,000 people have taken the tour.  The bus tour operates each week during the summer, Tuesday through Friday from 12:15-3:00 p.m. and is hosted by a guide; the guides are ORNL retirees.  The tour concentrates primarily on the history of Oak Ridge dating to the Manhattan Project Days of World War II, as well as some of the science occurring there today.  The graphite reactor is one of the featured parts of the tour.  It costs $2 per person which includes entrance to the American Museum of Science and Energy.  If the national security level rises to orange, the tour is closed.  The tour does not take reservations; however, to ensure CEC members a place on a tour, Mr. Strohl asked that CEC members call him at 865-574-4165.

Meeting Note:  Tiffany Gibby announced the weekly programs for the month of August including a possible behind the scenes tour at the aquarium on August 30.  Toward the end of the speaker’s presentation, a suggestion was made, and will be followed up by Tiffany, that the August 30 field trip be changed to an ORNL tour.

Thanks to Jim Barrott for the meeting summary.
