NEXT MEETING noon in the Terrace Room (was Continental Room before renovation) of Sheraton Read House Hotel____________________
March 7: "NASA Science Program for Elementary Education" Debbie Rosenow and Jamelie Kangles from Battle Academy
Battle Academy, an elementary school in downtown Chattanooga, was selected last year as a NASA Explorer School. NASA invites the selected schools to work with education specialists from NASA Centers in an effort to spark innovative science and mathematics instruction for students in grades 4 through 9. While partnered with NASA, NASA Explorer School teams will acquire new teaching resources and technology tools using NASA's unique content, experts and other resources -- to provide exciting learning experiences in science, mathematics and technology for students.
Debbie Rosenow will describe how their 5th grade science class is sending up an experiment on floating spheres of liquid in the "Weightless Wonder." Their experiment will be videotaped during 20 to 25 seconds of near-weightlessness that NASA's reduced gravity research aircraft can provide. Rosenow says NASA's "Weightless Wonder" creates weightless conditions for brief periods by flying up and down in large parabolic arcs and she hopes to be on the flight with their experiment later this spring. All of Battle Academy's work with NASA isn't focused on space. Jamelie Kangles will describe how her class will be tracking migrating land animals this spring with help from NASA.
Menu: Salad, Meat Loaf with Gravy, Mashed Potatoes, Broccoli, Bread

February 24: Engineers Week Banquet with David Carroll as Master of Ceremonies and The Honorable Ward Crutchfield, Senator, State of Tennessee as Speaker
Senator Crutchfield spoke on the "State of the State" about TennCare, Basic Education Program (BEP) and the Streamline Sales Tax
Our congratulations go to the following award recipients:
Baylor students who won the Chattanooga Math Counts on Feb. 5, were at the banquet. They will be competing March 19, in Math Counts at the state level. Jeff Parris indicated they are planning to start a Cathy Bradford Memorial Scholarship in honor of their Baylor math teacher who passed away in February.People To People:Sandra Knight, P.E. ............................ Bobbe showed a video of children doing their lessons at the Montessori School where each child is following their own lesson plan at their own pace. She told us that a child's focus follows their hands and children may appear to be wasting time as they repeat movements over and over, but they are working on their hand-eye coordination and concentrating on a task. If they are touching the lesson, they are connecting with it. Designing lessons, displays and bulletin boards encouraging children to touch and interact requires some maintenance at the end of each session to be sure all the pieces are there and in working condition for the next child to experience. Mrs. Spink said the children in their school are usually very good at math, because they give them visual connections to the basic concepts--they show them what is really happening in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. She showed golden beads they use to describe the value of the ones place, tens place, hundreds place and thousands place. We encouraged her to send a team next year to Math Counts.
