PREVIOUS MEETING __________________________________________________________

Monday, June 6:
"Refining Coal for Energy Independence--production of liquid fuels and electricity for the Growing Demand of the US”
         - Dale Bradshaw, Chief Technical officer for Advanced Coal Technology (ACT)

Dale Bradshaw began with a summary of the existing coal gasification plants, their locations and process descriptions.  Then he described chemically the decomposition of coal in a flash hydropyrolysis unit.  The process that ACT (Advanced Coal Technologies) will be testing in a plant being designed for India will use high temperature and pressure and a short residence time to convert 1000 tpd (tons per day) coal to 75 tpd of Benzene, Toluene, and Xylene.  Other products of this conversion will be 140 tpd low emission Fischer Tropsch (low sulfur) diesel fuel, 160 tpd #4 fuel oil, 32 tpd Naptha, 6 tpd Ammonia, 40 tpd Sulfur, and 370 tpd CHAR with almost no Sulfur, Nitrogen, or Volatile Toxins.  The CHAR can be burned in a conventional pulverized coal power plant.  The ACT process will be optimized for maximum profit by testing for the best residence time (100 milliseconds to 3000 milliseconds), temperature (1200 F to 1800 F), pressure (500 pisg to 900 psig) and coal particle size (50 microns to 250 microns).
