NEXT MEETING – MONDAY, August 15 (noon to 1:00 pm) ____________________________
(Cellar Restaurant at 2 Union Square in the basement of the Tallan Building at M.L. King and Carter Street)

Monday, August 15:  "Engineering Hurdles and Highlights of the Riverwalk Development"  - Mike Howard, Hamilton County Engineer

Hamilton County Engineer Mike Howard will discuss engineering hurdles and highlights of the Riverwalk development that runs from Chickamauga Dam to the Chattanooga Aquarium.  Howard says the initial three miles of Riverwalk passed through nine different properties, including land owned by TVA, railroads, a community college and several local businesses.  Also, 75 percent of the land was in the river’s flood plain and posed special design challenges for erosion control and riverbank stabilization.  He says the Riverwalk – much of which is on land that probably would not have been developed in traditional ways – is used by area residents and visitors for walking and riding bicycles.

Invocation:  Jack Anderson

Menu:  A buffet lunch for $11 will be available for attendees beginning at 11:30 a.m.  Lunch will include a salad, beef stroganoff, green beans, squash casserole, a roll, and cherry cobbler.  Reservations are not required, and guests are welcome.  For more information, call Judy Driggans at 751-7616 or Stephen Smith at 843-1815.

Parking:  Free parking (for those who leave a notice on their dash indicating they are with the Chattanooga Engineers Club) is available for attendees at the Days Inn on Carter Street.  There is also a parking garage behind the Tallan Building.

Monday, August 8:  "Low-Cost Battery-Less Sensors On High Voltage Conductors"  - Joe Graziano, Tennessee Valley Authority

Joe Graziano discussed transmission and distribution applications for batteryless sensors.  Some important criteria for the sensors are that they must be low-cost, low-maintenance, and should be equipped with components for recording and transmitting data for several different data types such as temperature, vibration, voltage and current.  The sensors would be interrogated by a reader, ideally outfitted on a helicopter 100-200 feet away permitting high-speed inspection, or possibly on an automobile or handheld unit.  One solution for the signal reading is called backscatter technology where two different radio frequencies work together to carry the signal from the sensor to the reader.  One of them, a higher frequency at about 2.45 GHz, serves as a carrier for a lower information frequency of about 100 kHz.  The benefits of backscatter technology include the ability to harvest low voltage power directly from transmission lines eliminating the need for battery power.  Smaller packaging, increased life expectancy and reduced EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) concerns are also factors.  Mr. Graziano mentioned an application for these sensors that is currently being considered is a low-cost, robust leakage current monitor for contaminated powerline insulation.  Powerline insulation becomes contaminated by dirt and anything else that may land on it and stick to it.
