Monday, August 22: "Power System
Developments in China" - Dr. Mo-Shing Chen, University of Texas at
Arlington
Dr. Mo-Shing Chen, a Professor Emeritus from the
University of Texas at Arlington will share his insights on power system
developments in China. The PR Newswire reported this spring that 21 of China's provincial power
grids imposed power blackouts on customers last winter because of the cold
winter and rapid economic growth.
News reports this summer indicated that China's need for electric power
still outstrips their supply. They plan to add 30 GW of power every year
over the next five years--roughly the size of the Tennessee Valley Authority
peak.
Dr. Chen has several areas of expertise including modeling
and analysis of electric power systems. He will be leading a seminar at
the Univeristy of Tennessee at Chattanooga on Reactive Power, August
23-25. A brochure with details about this class is available from Peggy-Tucker@utc.edu.
This will be a joint meeting of the IEEE Power Engineering Society and the Chattanooga Engineers
Club.
Invocation: Jack
Anderson

be available for attendees beginning at 11:30 a.m. Lunch will include a
