NEXT MEETING – MONDAY, August 29 (noon to
1:00 pm) ____________________________
(Cellar Restaurant at 2 Union
Square in the basement of the Tallan Building at M.L. King and Carter Street,
Chattanooga, TN 37402)
Monday, August 29: "Where Did All
Those Old Tires Go?" - Fred Weinhold, GreenMan Technologies, Inc.
Fred Weinhold will tell us the latest on recycling
tires. He says that tires can be used whole, shredded, in crumb or powder
form. Whole tires or shredded tires have been used as fuel for cement
kilns. Shredded tires with the steel belts magnetically removed have been
used as a substitute for crushed stone in road beds, landfills, and septic
fields. Mr. Weinhold says the shredded tires have also been used as fuel
in paper plants and electric plants. He says that crumb rubber has been
used for playground and athletic surfaces, running tracks, groundcovers, and
bullet containment systems to trap whole bullets at firing ranges.
GreenMan is paid to remove old tires, but not enough to process them.
Historically, GreenMan has been able to sell about 65% of a processed
tire. Then they would spend more than $1 million annually to dispose of
cross-contaminated rubber and steel called “waste wire.” Weinhold says
they recently installed equipment in their Georgia plant to further process the
waste wire into saleable components of rubber and steel. Their goal is to
turn 90% of each tire into some saleable component.
DARPA Update: Dr.
Novobilski, UTC, will give us a 5-minute update on their DARPA (Defense Advanced
Research Projects Agency) Grand Challenge project. The DARPA Grand
Challenge is a field test intended to accelerate research and development in
autonomous ground vehicles that will help save American lives on the
battlefield.
Invocation: Jack
Anderson
Menu: A buffet lunch for $11 will
be available for attendees beginning at 11:30 a.m. Lunch will include a
salad, sliced pork with apples, creamed corn, broccoli casserole, a roll, and
peach cobbler. Reservations are not required, and guests are
welcome. For more information, call Judy Driggans at 751-7616 or Brad
Baucom at 751-4696.
Parking: Free parking
(for those who leave a notice on their dash indicating they are with the
Chattanooga Engineers Club) is available for attendees at the Days Inn on Carter
Street. There is also a parking garage behind the Tallan
Building.

Monday,
August 22: "Power System Developments in China" - Dr. Mo-Shing Chen,
University of Texas at Arlington
Dr. Mo-Shing Chen, a Professor Emeritus from
the University of Texas at Arlington, told us there are opportunities for US
companies to sell electricity or equipment to produce electricity to the people
in China. There are 5 electrical transmission networks in China connected
by weak interconnections. Their transmission system is primarily 500
kV. In many areas, their distribution systems have voltages that are too
low. They need smarter transformers that will sense the load and ambient
conditions and change the tap settings as needed. He said he would like to
see some large wind turbines go into the northwest part of China. They
have bad air pollution and predominately coal-fired power plants. He
explained how some European companies and other countries offer to train Chinese
students about their equipment. Chinese are willing to go anywhere to
learn things, especially about electric power systems. They are very
interested in seeing things in the USA and they only want to learn. They
don’t have to earn a degree while here. Naturally, when they return to
China, they may be more likely to purchase the equipment they know about.
He is expecting China’s electric capacity to double from 400 GW to 800 GW in the
next 10 years. This was a joint meeting with the IEEE Power Engineering
Society and the Chattanooga Engineers Club.
