Monday, Sept. 12, 2005: "Today's New
Technology in the Trucking Industry, Marty Fletcher, U.S. Xpress,
Inc.
Marty Fletcher, director of Technology & Training
at U.S. Xpress Enterprises, will talk about the technology used today in the
trucking industry. Fletcher says trucks have become more fuel efficient
through aerodynamic designs, as well as from the use of automated manual
transmissions. These transmissions use sensors to decide when to shift
gears, and the gears are automatically shifted. U.S. Xpress also uses an
incentive program to reward drivers for operating vehicles more
efficiently. Fletcher's presentation will include a discussion of new
safety features, such as adaptive cruise control and collision-avoidance
systems, and new environmental regulations for trucks.
U.S. Xpress is the fifth-largest publicly owned truckload
carrier in the United States. Marty Fletcher has 35 years experience in
the automotive and heavy truck industry with concentration in computer
controls. He is an active member of the Technical Advisory Group of the
American Trucking Association
(ATA).

Network Sniffing - for wired and wireless
networks, is often associated with the 'evil' side of computing. It is
also a valuable tool for diagnosing networking problems, finding infected
computers, and debugging client/server problems, as well as detecting (and
hopefully fixing) security issues.
This demonstration will include
live sniffing using wired and wireless technologies: You are invited to bring a
WiFi device (PDA/Laptop) and be a part of the demonstration.
An
overview of widely available tools and techniques will be demonstrated, and a
limited number of bootable CD's with useful network sniffing and traffic
visualization software will be
available.
Reservations: If you would like
to join us for lunch, please contact Dawn Ellis by email at Dawn-Ellis@utc.edu or by phone at
423-425-4384 to let her know if you, or others, are planning to attend.
Confirmation of attendance is crucial in deciding how much pizza to order, so
please RSVP.
Parking:
Parking is free on the street near the University Center if a space can be found
or $1 per hour in the 4th Street garage
This will be a joint
meeting of the Chattanooga Engineers Club and the Chattanooga Chapter of the
IEEE Computer Society.
