MONDAY, Sept. 26, 2005 (noon to
1:00 pm) ____________________________
(Cellar Restaurant at 2 Union Square in
the basement of the Tallan Building at M.L. King and Carter
Street)
“21st Century
Nuclear Power Plant” Dan Ingersoll,
ORNL
Dan Ingersoll of Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Nuclear Technology
Program Office will discuss advanced nuclear power plants. Ingersoll has
been working with the U.S. Department of Energy, universities and other national
laboratories to develop a 21st-century nuclear-power-plant design based on old
technology applied in a new way, specifically, technology originally used in
ORNL’s Molten Salt Reactor. Ingersoll says the new concept uses the same
MSR liquid fluoride salt to cool a reactor that otherwise looks like a
traditional gas-cooled reactor.
Invocation: Jim Couch
Menu: A buffet lunch for $11
will be available for attendees beginning at 11:30 a.m. Lunch will
include a salad, beef stroganoff, carrots, turnip greens, a roll, and cherry
cobbler. Reservations are not required, and guests are welcome. For more
information, call Judy Driggans at 751-7616 or Brad Baucom at
751-4696.
Parking: Free parking (for those
who leave a notice on their dash indicating they are with the Chattanooga
Engineers Club) is available for attendees at the Days Inn on Carter
Street. There is also a parking garage behind the Tallan
Building.

Monday, September 19, 2005, "Challenge 2005
Ocean Odyssey" Ed Chapin
Ed Chapin gave us a history of the Chattanooga
Engineers Club's start and current involvement in the FIRST Lego League - an
alliance between FIRST and the Lego Company. FIRST (For Inspiration
and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a multinational non-profit
organization, that aspires to transform culture, making science, math,
engineering, and technology as cool for kids as sports are today. FIRST
operates the FIRST Robotics Competition in which teams of high school students
sponsored and assisted by local companies and volunteers, design, assemble, and
test a robot capable of performing a specified task in competition with other
teams.
This year, the theme is Ocean Odyssey. We are
partnering with the Tennessee Aquarium and the Chattanooga Manufacturers
Association as team sponsors. The rules were announced on Sept. 12 and we
have three middle school teams registered so far--Tyner, RoboTroop and a Home
School group. We have one more set that could be used by another team if
they will start and register by October. Call Ed Chapin at 802-9376 if you
know of another possible team or want to participate.
