PREVIOUS MEETING________________________________________________
Monday, September 26, 2005, "21st Century Nuclear Power Plant"  Dan Ingersoll, ORNL Dan gave us an excellent review of the progression of designs leading to todays and tomorrows nuclear power plants. He showed us the first 3 stages of nuclear designs and talked about the 4th generation of designs.  He spoke of six possible design ideas and then told us about how they were combining the ideas from the Molten Salt Reactor with the Very High Temperature Reactor.  He also talked about the concerns and technical hurdles to overcome in this design. Dan has been working with the Department of Energy, universities and other national laboratories to develop a 21st century nuclear power plant design based on many ideas including the technology that was originally used in ORNL's old Molten Salt Reactor Experiment (MSRE).  Dan explained how the liquid salt circulating through the reactor actually transfers and distributes the heat from the low-enriched uranium-235 graphite-coated fuel particles, delivering more heat to the job to be done.
