NEXT MEETING Monday, October 10, 2005 (11:00 am to noon)________________________

in the Chickamauga Room at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s University Center.

"Automated Wide-Area Surveillance” Don Campbell, VistaScape Security Systems

The Chattanooga Engineers Club and the Chattanooga Chapter of the IEEE Computer Society will have a joint meeting at 11:00 am Monday, Oct. 10. The meeting will be in the Chickamauga Room at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s University Center.

Don Campbell, VistaScape’s Director of Product Marketing, says of their security company that their eyes never blink.  He can say this because they use computer software to constantly monitor and compare views from IPIX cameras and many other security sensors across wide areas.  They bring all the information together into a central situation display.  They set up rules that help them track hundreds of objects across wide areas and issue specific alert information to security personnel.  VistaScape Security Systems is based out of Atlanta, Georgia.

Those planning to attend are asked to RSVP to Dawn Ellis at 425-4384 by Friday if they plan to participate in a pizza lunch during the meeting. The cost for lunch is $5.

Otherwise, reservations are not required. Guests are welcome. For more information, call Brad Baucom at 751-4696 or Judy Driggans at 751-7616.

Previous Meeting____________________________________________________________

Monday, October 3: "Stereopsis - 3D Image Generation and Viewing" Dr. Clint Smullen, UTC.

Dr. Smullen showed us photographs of early inventions to display three dimensions and then explained how the blue and red cardboard glasses and the polarized glasses work in the 3-D and IMAX movies.  He told us that Korea is the leader in stereopsis technology and other countries besides the US seem to have more interest in televising events in 3-D.  Broadcasting in 3-D is more expensive, because this requires the event to be broadcasted from multiple cameras—one as the right eye would see it and another as the left eye would see it.  Smullen described a number of ways that computer screens and televisions can be made to display in three dimensions.  Each method developed has gotten a little better in that the human can now be located in a number of places in front of the screen and still see in 3-D without the aid of goggles or glasses.
