NEXT MEETING: MONDAY, Feb. 13, 2006 (noon to 1:00 pm) ”Why Should We Pool Our Scholarship Fund With Other Local Organization’s Funds?” – Pete Cooper, President
The Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga, Inc. is a nonprofit organization which receives, holds, invests and distributes assets contributed by individuals and organizations for the benefit of Chattanooga, its citizens and its institutions. Community foundations are unique in the world of philanthropy. Although created to address issues within a certain geographic area, through grant making from the foundation’s endowment, community foundations also serve as vehicles for all citizens to impact the region’s future. Unlike private or corporate foundations that are endowed by a particular person, family or business, a community foundation holds funds contributed by many individuals and businesses that see the value of pooling their assets with fellow citizens to improve the community. Many individuals and organizations (including the Engineers Club) choose to use the Community Foundation as a tool for their giving because the Foundation offers resources and grantmaking experience to donors; and donors are able to avoid the costly undertaking of creating and maintaining a private or corporate foundation.”

“Know Your Instruments—Ground Flight School Basics” Stephen R. Smith
Stephen Smith is a private instrument-rated pilot and engineering consultant with Coalsmith Consultants, His presentation covered some of the basic engine and flight instruments on a Cessna 182. Aircraft performance, weight and balance, and the computer navigation systems were presented. Good pilots are also good information managers, and with the new systems pilots can get digital information from ground stations and satellite GPS systems to reduce cockpit workload and improve safety and utility of their aircraft. Stephen also showed some aerial photos from a recent floatplane flight in the Olympic Mtn. range west of Seattle, and a website that tracks planes in flight (www.flightaware.com). Quite a few members of the club acknowledged they were pilots or had received flight training, confirming the natural affinity of engineers for aeronautics.
