PREVIOUS MEETING Monday, February 13, 2006_________________________________________________

*"Why Should We Pool Our Scholarship Fund With Other Local Organization's Funds?"* – Pete Cooper, President, Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga

Peter Cooper discussed the role of the Community Foundation in receiving and disbursing funds for 211 different trust funds to scholarships and projects in our area. CFGC has six major areas of responsibility. Unrestricted funds come to the foundation from wills and estates, and are disbursed according to need within Hamilton County. About 100 funds are administered for families, locally. Project funds are designated for specific projects such as playgrounds and particular charities. CFGC also consults with non-profits such as the United Way to help solve problems with mission and operations. CFGC consults with individual donors receiving major inheritances from $20K to $250K to help donors structure giving under their wills. They provide charitable estate planning. The city and county designated CFGC for Katrina relief funding. The Engineer's Club's educational fund has been administered by CFGC since the mid 1990s, minimizing the tax preparation work for our club. The First Lego League received a $500 startup grant, which raised visibility of the project and allowed it to become self-funded. Compared to other cities it's size, Chattanooga has a relatively high per-capita giving rate.
