CLUB BUSINESS ___________________________________________________________

The nominating committee is seeking a candidate for the vacant officer position (2nd VP, Membership). A motion passed Feb. 6, to prepare amendments to the constitution and bylaws to rename the position of 2nd VP, Membership to Membership Chair and remove the position from the line of succession to President. The Membership Chair would remain an annual elected position and a part of the executive committee. The bylaws committee to make the exact wording changes and present them to the club include Ed Chapin (Chair), Brad Baucom, and Lulu Copeland.

PREVIOUS MEETING Monday, February 20, 2006. CHATTANOOGA E Week 2006 Kick-off Luncheon, UTC. ”Retaining US Leadership in Engineering Requires Inspiring the Next Generation of Engineers!” Gail Mattson, P.E., former National President of Society of Women Engineers spoke on the looming shortfall of American engineers and scientists, and discussed ways that engineering organizations like ours can help to close the gap in math and science education. Over 2 million engineering jobs will go unfilled in 2010 due to a 20% decline in enrollment. China, S. Korea, India, and Israel have made great strides in recruiting and retaining college graduates and are moving ahead in science capabilities. Women and minorities are needed, but lack role models in technical education. The key role for our club is to become more active in encouraging K-12 students to build science and engineering talents, and encourage educators to promote math and science in schools. Her presentation can be reviewed online at www.chattanoogaengineersclub.org/engineer/eweek/eweek2006.html
