NEXT MEETING:  MONDAY, April 3 - Jack Wagner, P. E.  - “The Rubik's Cube - 25th Anniversary.” This is the world's most prolific puzzle, with over 200 million cubes sold. Jack will illustrate the inner mechanisms of the cube and show a disassembled cube. He’ll also overview the solution to the puzzle, as well as solving the puzzle (twisting the planes of the cube until all sides are the same color). The Rubik's Cube is of interest to many mathematicians, partly because it is a tangible representation of a mathematical group. Particle physicists compare the motions and colors of the cube to quarks and hadrons. 

Location: (Cellar Restaurant at 2 Union Square in the basement of the Tallan Building (Regions Bank) at M.L. King and Carter Street)

 

Menu: A buffet lunch for $11 will be available for attendees beginning at 11:30 a.m. Guests are welcome. The buffet will include meatloaf, green beans, mashed potatoes, cherry cobbler, roll, and drink.

 

Parking: Free parking is available for attendees at the Days Inn on Carter Street. Leave a notice on the dashboard indicating you are with the Chattanooga Engineers Club. There is also a parking garage behind the Tallan Building (Regions Bank).

April 10 - "3D Mapping Technology" - Chris Morabito, FARO Technologies, Inc. The presentation is an introduction of their core measurement solutions. Chris will describe their newest technology solution in large scale 3D Laser Scanning and overview the applications where it is being utilized.  He will run an actual scan, show some of the capabilities of the hardware and software, and describe specific projects and customers where 3D scanning has been utilized. 

 

May 1 – Dr. Richard Rice, UTC, will discuss some aspects of technology transfer between the US and India and China.

 

PREVIOUS MEETING MONDAY, March 27 - "CITY WATER -- PUBLIC VS PRIVATE OWNERSHIP" - Donald C. Thomas, P.E. gave his independent economic assessment comparing public vs privately-owned water systems, costs, performance, and application to our situation in Chattanooga. Don made the case that the city should consider negotiations to purchase the water system. Mayor Ron Littlefield has expressed interest in the city acquiring the system. Today (Mar. 30) it was announced that the Executive Board of RWE AG has decided to pursue an initial public offering (IPO) in the U.S. for the parent company of the Tennessee-American Water Company that serves Chattanooga. The target is to complete the transaction during 2007.
