OTHER EVENTS OF INTEREST TO ENGINEERS

2006 Tennessee Valley Technology Corridor Summit, May 31-June 1, 2006, Chattanooga Convention Center, 1100 Carter St. Chattanooga, TN 37402   http://www.tennvalleycorridor.org/summits/detail.html

PREVIOUS MEETING Monday, May 1, "Is The "Flat World" As Flat As Some Think?"  -  Dr. Richard Rice, UTC

Dr. Richard Rice focused on China and India in his presentation and reminded us that there are costs associated with countries rising out of poverty.  Air pollution is a real problem in China now.  This will become a monetary social burden as more succumb to lung disease.  In China, as in Japan, with their focus on reducing the population there are now more grandparents than there are children to care for them.  There will be many jobs for engineers as cities grow in China and India.  Goals in China and India are being set higher for more High School students to complete college in these countries.  Dr. Rice listed services that are now traded and can be outsourced to other countries.  With improved communications around the world, services like education, security, information technology, and even radiology can be provided remotely.  Services still not likely to be outsourced are hair cuts, police, local transportation, and local utilities.
