NEXT MEETING  June 19 - "Renovation of Market Street Bridge and the 50th Anniversary of the Interstate" - Ken Flynn and Jennifer Osborne, Tenn. Dept. of Transportation.

As Riverbend comes to it's fiery conclusion, we engineers pause to gaze at the approach roads leading to the Market Street bridge and wonder "What's going on over and under the river to restore this Chattanooga Landmark?" Our speakers will discuss the restoration of the bridge by the Tennessee Dept. of Transportation.

The 310-foot double-leaf bascule bridge, designed by Scherzer Rolling Lift Bridge Company, and costing $161,000, made MSB the longest-spanned movable bridge in the world upon completion in 1917. A bascule bridge is a drawbridge with a counterweight that continuously balances the span, or "leaf", throughout the entire upward swing in providing clearance for boat traffic. Bascule is a French term for seesaw and balance, and bascule bridges operate along the same principle. They are the most common type of movable bridge in existence because they open quickly and require relatively little energy to operate. Civil and Mechanical Engineers, especially, should find this program most interesting - it's about concrete and steel, fire and water, statics and mechanics, and the process of restoring this engineering marvel.

PREVIOUS MEETING June 12, 2006 - "Georgia State University's CHARA Array at Historic Mount Wilson Observatory" - Dr. Harold A. McAlister, Georgia State University

Dr. Harold McAlister, Regents' Professor of Astronomy and Director of CHARA at Georgia State University shared some of the first scientific results from an array of six telescopes using variable light path correction devices to simulate a 300 meter telescope mirror. This wide optical mirror simulation allows the telescope to measure the sizes, shapes, distances, temperatures and masses of stars. The telescope array is located in the San Gabriel Mountains of southern California on the grounds of the famous Mt. Wilson Observatory. Dr. McAlister was introduced by Dr. Myron McCay, retired professor of physics and astronomy at UTC and mentor of Dr. McAlister. We were honored to have this presentation by a returning UTC graduate! Addtional background at www.chara.gsu.edu/CHARA and www.mtwilson.edu.
