NEXT MEETING
June 26, 2006 "Storm
Shelters by Remagen" - James Waller, 2006 winner
of Spirit of Innovation, Early Innovation Award.
This presentation
focuses on technology used to make rooms or buildings tornado resistant.
Engineers and other individuals who have security responsibilities should
expect wind-related damage to occur periodically in many parts of the United States.
It is important to recognize that a real-world tornado is not orderly and can
hurt people and damage buildings and property in a very irrational manner.
Safety of personnel and data can be enhanced by correct application of
construction principles used by Remagen Storm
Shelters.
James Waller,
P.E. is both president of Remagen Corporation of Monteagle, Tennessee and the National Storm Shelter
Association. He is a graduate of the U. S. Military Academy and holds the
Master of Science degree from the University
of Miami in Florida. Waller has received numerous
engineering awards, including the U. S. Army Materiel Command Certificate of
Achievement for his participation in the air drop design verification tests of
the Army's Sheridan tank and a commendation from
the American Institute of Architects for the engineering of the Baltimore (Maryland)
Camden Yards site of the home games of the Orioles' professional baseball team.
Aerodynamics and civil engineering are two topics combined in this interesting
presentation.

PREVIOUS MEETING
- June 19, 2006 - "Renovation of Market Street Bridge and the 50th
Anniversary of the Interstate" - Ken Flynn and Jennifer Osborne, Tenn.
Dept. of Transportation presented an interesting historical and engineering
talk on TDOTs project to restore the Market Street bridge, both esthetically and functionally. Historically,
the bridge is identified with the city, but upgrades to improve performance and
reliability are being incorporated to insure continued safe operation for
pedestrians, autos, and river traffic. Completion of repairs and renovations of
the Market Street Bridge
is expected by September 2007. Riverside Drive is
expected to close for 180 days beginning in September 2006 during these bridge
repairs. Jennifer Osborne, Director of Community Affairs for TDOT, spoke
briefly about the upcoming 50th year celebration of the interstate system, and
the commemorative cross-country event to retrace Lt.Col.
Eisenhower's route that took 65 days in 1917.
