with 1 hour lunch break (lunch on your own). These seminars are based on the International Building Code. They clearly illustrate how to increase the fire protection while controlling construction costs. They identify and explain over 100 design options which will permit design flexibility in all building types. Included are actual case studies and interactive discussions and problem solving exercises. Theses Seminars will provide 6 AIA HSW Training Credit Hours. Extra bonus every architect will receive a free copy of the 300 Page Multi-Code Fire Sprinkler Guide valued at $195.00 and used as the textbook for the seminar. This manual provides the design professional with the ability to evaluate the most cost effective way of providing active fire protection. Please email

PREVIOUS MEETING
"Two North Shore" Terry W. Barker and Heather Johnson of Riverstreet Architecture presented plans for developing the north shore of the Tennessee River and connecting it with downtown, thematically as well as physically. Using the US Green Business Council’s LEED Rating System, the newest development on Manufacturers Road is a set of three buildings in which the largest will house a second site of Greenlife Grocery as well as Rock Creek Outfitters. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and the new site will receive points in the rating system for “green” design and construction practices. For example, points will be obtained for the site itself which will reclaim an area near the old ceramic plants which had contamination. The site will have many environmental benefits including energy efficiency; indoor air quality; reduction in natural resource consumption by using reclaimed materials; and rainwater collection for irrigation of plants that will reduce surface temperatures in the parking lot. In addition, studies have been done on the amount of sun coming through windows so shades and window choices can actively reduce HVAC loads. Economic benefits will include lower energy bills and the buildings will actually last longer than with conventional construction methods and materials . This construction is running 9% under what the budget would be using conventional methods.
LEED was created as a design guideline to promote a whole-building integrated design process and have a positive impact for occupant health. A three-step process for certification involves 1) project registration, 2) technical support, and 3) building certification. There are four levels of LEED certification - Certified, Silver, Gold, and Platinum - and each is based on the number of points obtained in the rating system. A total of 69 points are available and the minimum certification requires 26 points. More information on the US Green Building Council can be found at www.usgbc.org and the LEED rating system can be found at www.leed.org.
