PREVIOUS MEETING

July 24, 2006 “H5N1 Bird Flu – Pandemic Threat” Don Drumm, TVA

A pandemic is a global outbreak in which a new virus is rapidly transmitted among humans resulting in serious illness & death worldwide. The H5N1 Bird Flu Virus is especially dangerous as it closely resembles the 1918 strain which caused 50 million deaths worldwide. There have been 229 people infected with bird flu as of July 4, 2006. The mortality rate of those infected has been 57% – 131 of 229 have died. Young healthy people with good immune systems may have the worst cases of this flu. Human outbreak could (but may not) spread from Asia to North America in 3 to 8 weeks. Pandemic planning has been mandated for all federal agencies including TVA. The anti-viral drug Tamiflu can relieve severity of the illness, but it’s in short supply. Work on synthetic vaccine is progressing. If a human outbreak occurs in the United States, it may cause as much as 40% absenteeism in the workplace. It has the potential to disrupt commerce and basic services. Prepare for being stuck at home without power and water. Plan for interruptions or delays in other services: Banks, hospitals, stores, postal service, trash pickup, etc. Expect social disorder. Begin stocking extra food, water, & supplies – at least a 10-day supply for everyone.
