PREVIOUS MEETING
August 21, 2006 “Advanced Boiling Water Reactor” Bill Grimme, GE Infrastructure, Energy
Bill Grimme described the benefits of the General Electric European Simplified Boiling Water Reactor (GE ESBWR). The units are larger—1520 Net MWe, have passive safety systems, and use natural circulation reactor operation. This design, already licensed in three countries, has proven fast construction and low operating and maintenance costs. The control room is below grade. The reactor core is partially below grade and protected by more than 12 feet of reinforced concrete containment and reactor building structures.
The Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR) already has an impressive track record. In Japan, four ABWR units are in operation; another three units are under construction in Taiwan and Japan, and nine more units are planned in Japan. It is feasible that an ABWR plant could be built in the United States and be commercially operational by 2012.
