NEXT MEETING Sept 18 – “MiniBaja Team
– A UTC Senior Engineering Design Report” -
Dr. Ron Goulet
The Mini Baja Midwest is one of three regional dune buggy
construction and racing competitions that simulate real-world engineering
design projects and their related challenges. Each team’s project is
judged on events such as the hill climb. chain pull, mud bog and endurance
race. Students not only must function as a team to design, build, test, promote
and race a vehicle, but they also must generate financial support for the
project and manage their educational priorities. The UTC
team placed 19th out of about 140 schools. The core team includes nine
mechanical engineers, one electrical engineer, one industrial engineer and one
chemical engineer. These students are gaining experience that they can take to
an employer and be of instant benefit.

MEETING SUMMARY
Through partnership with the
Chattanooga Chamber Education Committee, Dr. Scales requested that the
Chattanooga Engineers Club (CEC) work with teachers in the classroom to ensure
that the math and science curriculum is relevant to the skills needed in
industry. The CEC is asked to review the depth, breadth
and validity of the curriculum of the engineering academies. The Chamber of
Commerce is interested in bringing in skilled industries. We want to make sure
that Hamilton County Students are prepared to compete for these jobs on a
national level.
Dr. Scales yield the floor to
Mr. Robert E. Smith, principal of Soddy Daisy High School who discussed the
engineering program at Soddy Daisy High School, noting the success of one computer
student who went from being a ‘D’ student to an ‘A’ and
‘B’ student just by realizing the relevance of education to his
desire to learn computer operations.
The floor was then given back
to Dr. Scales for questions. Questions and suggestions followed the notion of
increasing the enthusiasm of students in the areas of math and science without
the subjects becoming boring to the students. The meeting adjourned with an
emphasis on the importance of reading and writing and the inclusion of the arts
as well as science and math.
QUESTIONS, SUGGESTIONS? If you have any questions
