NEXT MEETING - Oct. 2, 2006 – “Bare Naked: Emanation, Transmission and Theft of Information” – Joseph M. Kizza, PhD, Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, UT-Chattanooga
Identity theft, the stealing and malicious use of personal information for personal motives, is now the fastest growing crime of the digital age. But this is a small part of a bigger problem of surveillance, snooping, sniffing, and wardriving for information, preferably personal. This rise in the value of information is fueling the new “gold rush” of the information age by hackers and other unscrupulous individuals. This crime has again focused attention to the need for us to be more proactive in protecting information, especially personal information. One way and probably one of the best approaches is to start this process by being aware of the sources of vulnerabilities to information. This knowledge then helps us to find solutions and best practices to protect personal information. Kizza will discuss three of the main but least known sources of loss of information – emanation, transmission and theft of information devices – and discuss ways to mitigate the problem.
