NEXT MEETING - Nov. 6, 2006 “The Telephone” History Channel DVD - Modern Marvels.

Undeniably essential to modern life, the telephone is the most important, influential, and effective communication tool ever developed. This 50 minute DVD by THE HISTORY CHANNEL will let us witness this invention’s unbelievably dramatic true story – one of false starts, close calls, and a bitter rivalry.

All his life, Alexander Graham Bell was driven by a desire to create a machine that would make it easier for the deaf to speak and hear. Using an actual human ear from a cadaver to understand the nature of sound, Bell even enlisted a young Thomas Edison to help invent what would become the telephone.

Exploring how one man’s speaking device has grown into the technological web that links humankind, this thrilling program also revisits the race between Bell and rival Elisha Gray—who was building a similar design but ultimately filed the history-changing patent just two hours after Bell.

Location: The Tallan Cellar Restaurant, basement of Regions Bank at 200 West Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd Chattanooga, TN 37402.

Parking: Parking is available on the 10th street side of the building, or you may park at the Days Inn Hotel across Carter Street (leave a dashboard note saying “Chatta. Engrs. Club”).

ADDITIONAL ITEMS OF INTEREST

Come witness an informal First Lego League Competition PRACTICE session. Nov. 11 (Saturday), 11 AM - 2 PM EST
At Enterprise South Park hosted by eSpin Technologies, a manufacturer of nano-fiber and nano-fiber products. This will be a very informal session where teams can practice the 150 second “ordeal” of a competition round several times. They will also meet and speak with a host that reflects this year’s theme. There will be time for competition, some research, and some socializing with other teams. This session is NOT an attempt to be just like the Cookeville competition. It is intended to encourage and strengthen the team spirit while giving them a “taste” of the competitive pressure. Mock presentations are not expected, but any team that wishes to may make a “trial run” at the presentation aspect of the competition.

LAST MEETING - Oct. 30, 2006 – “The State of the Art in Materials Selection In Engineering Design” Dr. Ron Goulet, UTC. One hour PDU credit.

Dr. Goulet, an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering who specializes in Orthopaedic Biomechanics Research, gave a demonstration of CES Selector by Mike Ashby, Cambridge University and Granta Ltd. The two examples he led us through were selecting a material suitable for a kiln wall and possible materials for an oar. The database of materials holds known phyical properties of over sixty thousand materials. Some properties are given in a range as they are in tables in books. The sorting of materials is done graphically in a number of stages. Combinations of known physical properties can be made into a psuedo property for sorting and filtering possible materials.
