NEXT MEETING Nov. 20, 2006 “Structural Geology of the Chattanooga Area” – Dr. Jonathan W. Mies, UTC

Dr. Jonathan Mies of UTC Geology Department, a knowledgeable and enthusiastic UTC Professor of Geology, will present a public lecture describing the structural geology of the Chattanooga area and a geomechanical model for tensile fractures that develop perpendicular to the lengths of folds.

Chattanooga lies at the northwest boundary of the Valley and Ridge physiographic province, otherwise known to geologists as the Appalachian fold and thrust belt. This region is underlain by layers of sedimentary rock, Cambrian to Mississippian in age, that are broken and displaced by numerous thrust faults and have been folded into anticlines and synclines. These structures were produced by tectonic processes that formed the Appalachian Mountains. Subsequent erosion of these structures has resulted in the alternating valleys and ridges that characterize the landscape.

You may have noticed rock rip-rap material along the bank of the Tennessee River on the Riverwalk. This white limestone originates largely or entirely from skeletons of tiny marine life and is of Ordovician age (440 million to 500 million years ago). The rock was supplied by TVA, spoil from constructing the lake and interior of TVA’s Raccoon Mountain Pumped Storage plant.

Location: The Tallan Cellar Restaurant, basement of Regions Bank at 200 West Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd Chattanooga, TN 37402.

Parking: Parking is available on the 10th street side of the building, or you may park at the Days Inn Hotel across Carter Street (leave a dashboard note saying “Chatta. Engrs. Club”).

Lunch will be available for $11 beginning at 11:30 am and will be buffet style including roast pork and dressing, creamed corn, green beans, garden salad, apple cobbler, roll and a drink.

LAST MEETING - Nov. 13, 2006 “Microfiltration for Water Treatment” Bob Borneman, Vice President with ARCADIS in Chattanooga.

Bob Borneman discussed the many ways water can be filtered and talked specifically about a filtration system for rural water utility in upper east Tennessee. They wanted to restore and utilize a historical building on property they had recently acquired. Design of the project, equipment selection, and installation had to carefully consider not only the water treatment requirements but also the restoration of the existing building. The project was successfully placed in service at the end of 2005.
