NEXT MEETING November 27, 12 Noon – “LJT – Steel Tubing Manufacturer – Plant Tour”
Be sure to attend this TOUR on Monday! The line will be running tube as we watch. Lock Joint Tube (LJT) manufactures mechanical and structural grade steel tubing from hot rolled, cold rolled, aluminized and galvanized steel. Tubing is used in automobiles, office furniture, health care equipment, exercise equipment and display fixtures. The 105,000 square foot manufacturing plant is situated along the Tennessee River and has both rail and barge access. LJT-TN slits its own coil stock, which is then consumed on a state of the art tube mill. Michael Donnelly is the Plant Manager, but because he will be traveling that day, David Adams, Quality Control, will host the tour.
INSTRUCTIONS: Assemble in the plant parking lot, 600 River Terminal Road, Chattanooga, TN between 11:30 and 12. Safety glasses are required; bring your own safety glasses and hard hats. Wear sturdy shoes, no sandals or high heels. The Plant Manager, Michael Donnelly, will be traveling during our tour and David Adams, Quality Control, will be our host.
DIRECTIONS TO PLANT: 600 River Terminal Rd., off Amnicola Hwy across from Latta Street, 3.4 miles (9 minutes) from downtown. From Market St go EAST on 4th Street 0.2 mile, LEFT onto RIVERSIDE DRIVE, drive 2.3 miles on Amnicola Hwy, turn LEFT onto River Terminal Rd, and look for LJT Plant signs on the LEFT. Park in front but away from lobby if possible. Gather at the front door of the facility. We will enter at Noon and be out by 1pm. Lunch is on your own.
BUSINESS
The nominating committee reports that Naveed Minhas and James Schwall are willing to serve as candidates for the position of Secretary. Both have been members for a number for years. A brief description of their educational and work experience will soon be listed in a link on our web site: http://www.chattanoogaengineersclub.org . Since we are conducting a plant tour on November 27 – we will not hold elections on that date. Instead, we will have an opportunity to accept further nominations for officers from the floor (actually the parking lot at our plant the tour) on November 27 and hold the elections the subsequent week, on Monday, December 4.

LAST MEETING - Nov. 20, 2006 “Structural Geology of the Chattanooga Area” – Dr. Jonathan W. Mies, UTC
Dr. Jonathan Mies of UTC’s Geology Department gave an enthusiastic presentation describing the structural geology of the Chattanooga area. He described the geography and morphology of the ridges and valleys around Chattanooga. His geotechnical model for tensile fractures that develop perpendicular to the lengths of folds was similar in approach to a static analysis of a highway bridge. His mathematical models were elegantly and logically portrayed along with 3D computer models of local escarpments. Chattanooga lies in an interesting fold and thrust belt that contains many unique features.
