NEXT MEETING – DEC. 4, 2006 – “The Renaissance Park Project” – Dan Kral, Stein Construction Co.

Twenty years ago, Chattanooga took a bold step into the future by taking a bold step back toward its riverfront. In making the commitment to reconnect with their river, Chattanoogans set the stage for the development of the Tennessee Aquarium, the Riverpark, the Walnut Street Bridge and Coolidge Park. In the past decade alone, hundreds of millions of dollars have been invested in the riverfront and downtown Chattanooga. The resulting revitalization has won international recognition for the city and its commitment to planning and implementation. Dan Kral will give us highlights of the design and construction of the 5th phase of the waterfront development.

The Renaissance Park comprises the area near the intersection of Manufacturers Road, Cherokee Boulevard and Market Street. The park is a new mixed-use neighborhood of residential and commercial development that marks the beginning of a connection between downtown and Moccasin Bend. The highlight of this district is the Tennessee Wetland Park, preserving the low-lying areas west of the Market Street Bridge as a nature reserve with an interpretive riverside boardwalk and reclaiming an industrial waste cell as a manufactured wetland. The Adventure Playground and a segment of the Trail of Tears bring recreation and history to the district, and the collective components of the district provide a perfect complement to Coolidge Park.

Dan Kral, currently with Stein Construction Co., was the project manager for the 5th package of the 21st Century Waterfront Project during his tenure at RiverCity Company. He is a graduate of Vanderbilt University with a degree in Civil Engineering.

LAST MEETING - Nov 27 - Plant Tour - Lock Joint Tube and Steel Warehouse. pictures by Uwe. A total of 21 CEC members attended the tour. This facility takes rolls of steel plate, slits them and bends the plate into tubing. The process produces several grades of pipe from various types of steel. Round and square pipe is produced. The plant can also cut plate steel from the rolls and reduce the curling to keep the plate flat. A new expansion is planned that will double the size of the plant.
