ADDITIONAL ITEMS OF INTEREST

LAST MEETING - DEC 4 – “The Renaissance Park Project” – Dan Kral, Stein Construction Co.

Dan Kral gave us highlights of the design and construction of the 5th phase of Chattanooga’s waterfront development, preserving the low-lying areas west of the Market Street Bridge as a nature reserve with an interpretive riverside boardwalk, and reclaiming an industrial waste site as a manufactured wetland. The goals were to bring recreation and history to the district, and the collective components of the district provide a perfect complement to Coolidge Park. The demolition of the old Roper plating factory required innovative nethods to recontour the facility for the constructed wetland as well as containment and storage of contaminated concrete and soil. Monitoring wells and subsurface clay caps were used to create a park from a brownfield. The wetlands design is monitored to improve water quality discharging to the Tennessee River and the city sewer systems.
