NEXT MEETING

Monday, noon to 1 p.m, March 12 – Wayne Huddleston, Project Manager with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be speaking on the construction of the lock at the Chickamauga Dam on the Tennessee River. Mr. Huddleston will describe the design features of the new lock and point out aspects of the aggressive maintenance program, including such things as the cuts made in the lock to relieve stress due to the concrete growth problem.

Lunch will be available for $11 beginning at 11:30 am and will be buffet style including fried chicken, green beans, creamed potatoes, apple cobbler, roll, and drink.

Parking: You may park at the Days Inn Hotel across Carter Street (leave a dashboard note saying “Cha. Engrs. Club”). Parking is also available at the Tallan building or Public Library.

Professional Development units (PDUs) are available for most technical programs at CEC meetings.

March 19 – Rob Del Bueno of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy will describe the process developed by his company to convert used cooking oil into fuel for mass transit.
March 26 – Robert Whitten, Jr. from the National Center for Computational Science at Oak Ridge National Laboratory will be speaking on status of high performance computing at ORNL.
April 2 – Preview of Kruesi Award for Innovation Finalists
April 5 – EPB invited for a presentation on “Fiber to the Home.”

PREVIOUS WEEK PROGRAM

March 5, 2007 – “The UK Response to Global Warming” Dr. Ron Bailey, Guerry Professor and Dean of The College of Engineering at UT Chattanooga, provided an overview of the United Kingdom’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The UK has set a new goal of a 60% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2050, including generating 20 percent of energy from renewable sources by 2020. Dr. Bailey provided an overview of published results to date and a whitepaper that outlines UK plans for continued reductions in greenhouse gases. Members discussed the possibility of a policy document to reduce Chattanooga’s carbon footprint.

All members are encouraged to assist with the 53rd Annual Chattanooga Regional Science & Engineering Fair, March 12-15, 2007, Harrison Racquet Center, UTC Campus, Chattanooga. Volunteers needed for Setup Mar 12 3-9pm, Judging Mar 13 9a-4p, Monitors Mar 14-15 9a-4p, and loadout after the awards ceremony Mar 15 6-9pm. Two Smithsonian presenters will conduct workshops on “Engineering by Design” specifically related to architecture Monday thru Wednesday at Tyner Engineering academies. Wally Mertes, program manager, will visit our next meeting and give a brief summary. In the middle schools, the sessions will provide an opportunity for students to design a building (via
sketch) and make design decisions on their building based on real-life situations (climate, load, client preferences,etc). In the high schools, the students will create a load-bearing bridge out of ‘beams’ made of paper, folded and glued in different ways to make it stronger. Local engineers and architects will follow up in a couple of months at the schools.

Speaking Opportunities! Volunteers needed to address speaker requests from elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, and youth groups to visit classrooms, assemblies, and group meetings. High school student groups may schedule tours of CSTCC to visit mechanical, electrical, civil, chemical technology classes and other locations of the campus.
