Sciences (NCCS) was founded in 1992 to advance the state of the art in
high-performance computing (HPC) by bringing a new generation of parallel
computers out of the laboratory and into the hands of the scientists who could
most use them. It is a managed activity of the Advanced Scientific Computing
Research program of the DOE Office of Science (DOE-SC) and is located at the
Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Robert Whitten, Jr. will provide an overview of
the NCCS, with emphasis on use of the leadership class of computing resources
that are available at ORNL.

Awards
The Kruesi Award is
presented annually to a Chattanooga
area company that exemplifies business ingenuity. The designation honors a family whose Swiss
ancestor, John Kruesi, immigrated to America and
worked with inventor Thomas A. Edison. Kruesi made the first phonograph in 1877 and was the
principal mechanic on countless other patented innovations, including the
incandescent light bulb. The Kruesi family permeates the Chattanooga community today. The finalist for this year will describe the
innovations that led to their nomination for the 2007 Spirit of Innovation
Awards.

Rob Del Bueno of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy described the process
developed by his company to convert used cooking oil into fuel for mass
transit. The first production unit is capable of recycling up to 250,000
gallons of used cooking oil into biodiesel that meets
stringent ASTM standards. This unit is now producing all fuel for Emory University's
fleet of shuttle buses, using cooking oil from the campus eating
facilities. Using a
strategy of local collection, conversion and use. The company has
developed a business model that could be franchised to other markets of similar
size.
