Next Meeting - May 7 - “Wind Energy” Ben Fischer, President of Signal Wind Energy LLC, will discuss America’s increasing desire for renewable energy and why wind energy is leading the way. Globally, wind power generation more than quadrupled between 2000 and 2006.Wind energy is a growing industry that is challenging and good for the environment. Signal Wind Energy, LLC, is a leading Design/Build Contractor for Wind Energy projects and a subsidiary of EMJ Corporation, one of the most respected providers for construction services in the nation. In 2006 alone, Signal Wind built approximately 10% of the wind projects in the US. Mr. Fischer is a Registered Professional Engineer and has a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Lunch will be available for $11 beginning at 11:30 am, and will be from the outstanding Cellar Buffet. Location: Tallan Cellar Restaurant, 200 West ML King Blvd, Chattanooga, TN 37402.

Note: Parking is no longer available at the Days Inn Hotel due to extensive on-going renovations at the Inn. Use on street meters or park in the rear of the Tallan Building or in one of the commercial lots nearby.

Professional Development units (PDUs) are available for most technical programs at CEC meetings.

FUTURE MEETINGS

May 14 - Michael J. Landguth, A.A.E., President and CEO, Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport Authority, will speak on airport growth and its impact on the community. Mike will discuss the many new flights available from Chattanooga, including the low cost carrier that recently joined the airport. Did you know that Mickey Mouse is now a quick 90 minute flight away?? Will engineers find Mickey Mouse compelling?

May 21 - The UTC Mini Baja Team will present their entry in the annual competition sponsored by the Society for Automotive Engineers. Comparisons will be made to the very successful vehicle built by UTC students last year. A demonstration of both vehicles will be held in Miller Park, weather permitting.

PREVIOUS WEEK PROGRAM

Noon, April 30 - FIELD TRIP AND BOX LUNCH AT UT SIMCENTER. Dr. Henry McDonald, University Professor of Engineering and a member of the National Academy of Engineering, provided a presentation and tour of the high performance computing capabilities of the SimCenter. He presented an overview of on-going research activities of the SimCenter, including research on aerodynamics of high performance aircraft, surface vehicles, dispersion of airborne contaminants, internal flow in fuel cells, air pollution in Smoky Mountain National Park, solid rocket motor performance, weather patterns in the Gulf of Mexico, magnetic resonance in closed cavities, hull design for new submarines and new shallow water navy vessels. Members viewed the computer center and discussed it’s operation with graduate students. A fuel cell test center was also toured. This 5kw unit is being tested and a second, 25kw fuel cell is planned.

May 14, 6:00 pm - American Society for Quality (ASQ) Dinner meeting, “Storytelling Used to Develop a System Model that Provides Root Cause Analysis.” Presented by: Molly Catron. Monday, May 14, 2007, 6:00 p.m., at Out of the Blue Café - in River Park (Behind the Marine Reserve buildings on Amnicola Highway) The cost is $12 per guest or member, $6 each for students. Ms. Catron uses her storytelling talent to both entertain and instruct. This event will leave you with a different view of root cause analysis. Molly Catron is with the state storytelling association and a former employee of Eastman Chemical. Reservations are required by Thursday, May 10, 12:00 Noon. Speaking Opportunities! Volunteers needed to address speaker requests from elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, and youth groups to visit classrooms, assemblies, and group meetings. High school student groups may schedule tours of CSTCC to visit mechanical, electrical, civil, chemical technology classes and other locations of the campus.
