June 18 State-of-the-art Demonstration of Passive Solar Lighting at Siskin Children’s' Institute

Jim Frierson facilitated a demonstration and videoconference presentation by John Morris, President & CEO of Sunlight Direct of a fully integrated natural lighting system in the training room on the second floor of the Siskin Children's Institute at 1101 Carter Street. The system consists of a roof mounted, parabolic mirror that collects and redirects natural sunlight through a bundle of plastic fiber optic cables into prismatic light bars that are integrated into hybrid natural/florescent lighting fixtures. The resulting hybrid system provides the advantages of natural sunlight while conserving energy and reducing the heat load normally associated with artificial lighting.  Box lunches were provided by the Cellar Restaurant's catering service.

June 15 - TSPE, ASCE, CEC, and CTC hosted a joint meeting as part of Navy Week in Chattanooga with  Rear Admiral Raymond K. Alexander, Civil Engineer Corps, Deputy Chief of Civil Engineers and Deputy Commander for Contingency Engineering as the keynote speaker. The Admiral generated a lot of respect for the work being done by the Navy Civil Engineering Corp. to rebuild critical infrastructure in Iraq. We wish him Godspeed and Good Luck in leading our engineering troops, and thank him for a job well done.
