THIS WEEK’S PROGRAM - September 10 – “History, Present and Future for U.S. Pipe”
U.S. Pipe began operation in Chattanooga more than 125 years ago. Jim Smallwood will talk about the evolution of pipe manufacturing processes and the history of U.S. Pipe leading up the changes that are now taking place at this historic Chattanooga company.
Lunch will be available for $11 beginning at 11:30 am, and will be from the outstanding Cellar Buffet. Location: Tallan Cellar Restaurant, 200 West ML King Blvd, Chattanooga, TN 37402. Parking: use on street meters or the commercial lot in the rear of the Tallan Building, or in one of the commercial lots nearby.
FUTURE MEETINGSSeptember 17 – Bob Hoagland invited to discuss the Jumpoff Community Land
Trust and its mission, as well as the community’s strategy for creating
greater energy and food independence over the next ten years.
The presentation will include a discussion
of the relative merits of solar power, mini-hydro, wind, as well as locally
produced biodiesel and ethanol. Energy issues will be discussed in the context
of lifestyle changes required to reduce consumption, more aggressive mass
transit strategies, and the changing perspective on nuclear generated
electricity among environmental groups.
A plan to obtain 90% of the
community’s food supply from within a
30-mile radius will also be presented.
Sept 24, Barron Tasker of Floodbloc confirmed to speak on technology for flood control.
October 1, Tim McGhee confirmed to discuss plans for a new Construction Management degree program to be developed by UT Chattanooga and Chattanooga State Technical Community College.

The Alumni Career Mentoring Program is a great way for UTC students to get in touch with other UTC graduates who can provide information or direction about career choices. The program consists of a database of alumni who have volunteered to share their career experiences and advice with students and other alumni. These individuals have diverse academic backgrounds and represent many industries, career fields, job functions and locations. The UTC Alumni Career Mentor Program is sponsored by the Placement and Student Employment Center. The time commitment is minimal and is a much appreciated way for you as an alum to share your expertise in your career area and provide information or direction about career choices with current students. As an Alumni Career Mentor a few of the ways you can participate include: Career contact & networking, Company & industry information, Employment trends (profession or industry), Job function information, Job search strategies, Job shadowing. Speaking Opportunities! Volunteers needed to address speaker requests from elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, and youth groups to visit classrooms, assemblies, and group meetings. High school student groups may schedule tours of CSTCC to visit mechanical, electrical, civil, chemical technology classes and other locations of the campus.
