NEXT MONDAY - November 5
"How Will You Fuel Your Brand New Model 2030 Hydrogen Fuel Cell Powered
Car?"
According to a study published by the National Academies
of Science, hydrogen fuel cell powered automobiles could replace all
internal combustion engine powered vehicles by the middle of the 21st
century. Today, there are few operating hydrogen fueling stations in the
world Bob Hay, P.E., will discuss the issues and challenges to make,
store, and dispense hydrogen.
The Advanced Technology for Transportation Research Project
(ATTRP) at UTC is on the forefront of regional efforts
to build the first hydrogen fueling station in Tennessee. Bob
will provide a systems engineering overview of the design of a hydrogen
fueling station that could be built by ATTRP in the near future
in Chattanooga to provide fuel for a hydrogen fuel cell powered
hybrid bus that ATTRP has proposed for use as a UTC campus shuttle.
Bob is a graduate of Lafayette College with a BS-EE
degree. Presently he is working on a Masters degree in Industrial
Engineering at UTC. His career includes electrical engineering,
telecommunications systems design, and systems engineering and has been focused
on implementing new technology and designing first-of-its-kind systems.
Academically, he is interested in energy management, fuel cells and research on
electric vehicle technology.
Lunch will be available for $11
beginning at 11:30 am, and will be from the outstanding Cellar Buffet. Location:
Tallan Cellar Restaurant, 200 West ML King Blvd, Chattanooga, TN 37402. Parking:
use on street meters or the commercial lot in the rear of the Tallan Building,
or in one of the commercial lots nearby
FUTURE
MEETINGS
November 12 - No meeting - Federal
Holiday
November 19 - Alan Field invited to
explain Spam Blockers, what they are and why we need them
November 26 - Mark Hairr and Dan Simpson invited to discuss
plans for deploying a hydrogen powered fuel cell bus for the UTC
campus
December 3 - Kirk Shore invited to explain Intelligent
Transportation Systems and describe CARTA's plans for deployment in
Chattanooga

LAST MEETING - October 29 - Matthew Huyster, EPA,
On-Scene Coordinator (OCS) described how EPA responds to environmental
emergencies such as oil spills, chemical releases, and major disasters.
OSC’s also conduct inspections and time-critical removals across the
country. Matthew praised the club for its support of the First Lego League
and said it was a significant influence on him as a teenager in becoming an
engineer. His presentation explained the OSC roles and responsibilities, and he
discussed EPA's role in disasters of national significance such as Hurricane
Katrina.

ITEMS OF INTEREST
- FIRST LEGO LEAGUE
- November 3 – Tullahoma Local Invitational
CEC
member Ed Chapin is supporting First Lego League teams in our area, some of whom
will attend a learning session at Tullahoma Nov 3. Our local event will be two
weeks later and many of these same teams will be invited. Ten teams will have 3
opportunities to complete missions and 1 project presentation. The event will be
judged by same criteria as the state competition. Any interested members who can
attend should contact Ed.
The local teams participating: WEST MIDDLE SCHOOL,
HOMESCHOOLERS, HANDSONSCIENCECTR, EASTTULLAHOMA, NANODEERE, LINDEN ELEMENTARY
(Oak Ridge, TN), CLEVELAND MIDDLE SCHOOL, (Cleveland, TN), BRENTWOOD,
CHATTANOOGA, HUNTSVILLE, AL, SPRING HILL, TN, COOKVILLE, TN Contact ED CHAPIN if
you can attend and support our Chattanooga area teams.
-NOVEMBER 17 FIRST LEGO LEAGUE CHATTANOOGA EVENT
The 2007 local
event will be at (drum roll, please) the SimCenter. The UTC SimCenter is
nationally known for computer modeling innovation and research, many projects
dealing directly with energy and environmental issues. In addition we will have
resources (really smart people and some literature) from several of our other
sponsors to answer questions about research issues. This year's research project
involves the energy issues facing a local building (building chosen by the
team), as well as all issues involving energy conversion and storage. For more
information see:
http://www.firstlegoleague.org
To the media: best opportunities will be between 10 AM and
11 AM, when everything is running at a frantic pace. I know weekend events are
hard to cover, but we appreciate your help for the last five years.
To the sponsors: THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! This
year's challenge involves ALL forms of energy conversion and use, from electric
vehicles to sea-wave generated power. Your participation makes this great
educational event possible.
To CEC officers and members: Make sure that your firm is
represented. Financial contributions (minimum $100 and maximum $200) are
welcome, BUT we can use any expert that you have in energy issues. Ask them to
attend as "local experts". To local and area team coaches: Plan to attend again
this year. This is the most complex set of challenges in six years. Let me know
ASAP if you plan to come.
