LAST MEETING
January 7, 2008 - "Nuclear Renaissance - Westinghouse AP1000 Power Plant".  Jim Schwall, Principal Engineer at Westinghouse Electric Co., presented the Westinghouse AP1000 nuclear plant and discussed the nuclear renaissance.  While the world waits for long-term solutions to future energy needs and environmental concerns, the nuclear industry is preparing for and beginning the leading edge of a renaissance.  Westinghouse has hired approximately 2000 employees, some local, to meet the demand for nuclear power.  The most significant portion of this new work will focus on the AP1000, Westinghouse's entry into the Generation III+ market.  The AP1000 represents technology for today.  Design simplification eliminates components and reduces costs.  The AP1000 design makes significant use of passive safety systems.  The AP1000 achieved NRC Design Certification on December 30, 2005.
