February 25, 2008 - "Do You Want to Paddle a Canoe Under a Low Bridge?".  Senior Project Presentations will be made by UTC students Stuart Rymer (Concrete Canoe) and Seth Campbell (Steel Bridge).

This week’s program will feature two exciting and somewhat perplexing engineering design projects.   These are constructing and competing in a concrete canoe and building and constructing a low steel bridge.  That's right, the concrete canoe is a project to float in water and challenge the UTC Engineering "Moccasin" team to build and compete in the 2008 Concrete Canoe Competition in Orlando, Florida at the end of March 2008.  The team member will describe the design and analysis activities that have and will take place to float concrete.  The nature of the compet ition will be described along with the numerous tasks now under way to meet target design of fabricating a canoe made of concrete.  The process of identifying, experimenting, and making concrete lighter that water will be noted (especially for those enthusiasts who may wish to try this themselves).  The second project will be the design and construction efforts by the UTC Engineering Steel Bridge Team.  The overall project will be described including efforts for competing in the 2008 Steel Bridge Competition in Orlando, Florida at the end of March 200.  Hear the description of how this scale bridge is coming together which will r equire a minimum of erection time, innovative member joint design, and beam structure.  The team's final challenge will be the assembly under competitive conditions.  This bridge must be designed and constructed under a number of stringent constraints (including the low bridge height requirement).  The team member will describe how the team addressed these constraints.  These included critical issues such as joining members and beam loadings.  Come and hear how these soon-to-be-engineers are leading engineering design in new directions into the future.
