LAST MEETING

April 7, 2008 - Homeland Security, Fact or Fiction, the Reality and the Future

Mark Morgan, a Senior Risk Consultant for Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC), told us that while many terrorist threats have actually been stopped, technology for a terrorist to cause an event which could result in many deaths and disrupt the government is readily available.  The cost may be as low as $1500.  Some people still do not believe locations such as Chattanooga may be a target, but they are fooling themselves.  Terrorists want to gain attention.  While we do need to preve nt and disrupt terrorist attacks, not all threats are related to terrorist activity.  We are overdue for a pandemic disease, and natural disasters such as hurricanes or earthquakes can occur at any time.  Local government will be on its own after a disaster because it takes time to get people in place.  Buyer beware of "snake oil" - products commercially available to mitigate security threats.  Mark has worked for the Army and the Reagan Administration as a consultant.  The CEC was invited to share in this joint seminar sponsored by UTC Special Events and Speakers Committee.
