LAST MEETING

April 14, 2008 - The UTC Senior Project Ethanol Conversion team made a presentation on the conversion of a Saturn Vue to run on ethanol/e-85.  The project began as an intensive study of all automotive alternative fuels including hydrogen IC,hydrogen fuel cell, ethanol, natural gas, and other biofuels.  The converted Saturn Vue was analyzed for performance.  Also included was an overall study of the "photon to wheel" energy conversion process for ethanol made from corn and cellulose.  While the heating value of ethanol is lower than for gasoline, there is a trade-off between performance and cost such that the decision point for use depend s on price of the fuel.  Presenters were Bryan Klein, Kyle Emerson, Dianah Dugan and Josh Best.

ITEMS OF INTEREST 

Seven Chattanooga-area companies have been selected as Kruesi Award finalists.  The award recipient as well as the other finalists was recognized at the Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce Spirit of Innovation Awards Luncheon on April 16.  The finalists were: Accurate Automation Corporation, Andersen Flaps, Inc., Astec Industries, Inc., Cleveland Tubing, Inc., EnWaste Recovery Systems, Transcard and TR Automation. 3^rd Annual College of Engineering and Computer Science Design Project Poster Showcase 

You are invited to the 2008 UTC Design Project Poster Showcase, Tuesday, April 22, 2008, 4:00 - 6:00 PM, Engineering, Math and Computer Science Building, Palmetto at Vine Street.  All design projects in Engineering and Computer Science will be on display for your viewing.  Some of these will be displayed on the 4th floor.  Some larger ones will be displayed outside the entry on the 2nd floor.

 

The Showcase features the Freshman and Senior student solutions to Assistive Technology needs in this and neighboring communities.  Also featured are the Junior/Senior design projects that respond to regional competitions for the Mechanical and Civil engineering societies and design projects that respond to research addressing energy conversion and alternative fuels. 

One project being featured at the Showcase (team: Joe Branam, Matt Carroll, Robert Mazza, Vipin Joseph, and Kasia Petras) won 1^st place in the Freshman/Sophomore Design Project Competition  at the recent American Society for Engineering Education Southeastern Section Conference held in Memphis April 6^th – 8^th.  

 

Refreshments will be served in the Maytag Conference Room. 

 

Professional Development Units (PDU's) are available for most technical programs at CEC meetings.
