LAST MEETING
May 5, 2008 - Computing: The Past, Present and Future - Alan Field of SURFN Development Corp. made a very well received presentation on the three generations of the computer technology industry. The first generation was mechanical (2500B.C.-1940 A.D.), illustrated by the Roman odometer and the Antikathera mechanism. The second generation has been electronic (1940-present), illustrated by mini-computers (1965) and personal computers (1977), with development described by Moore's law, Wirth's law and blue shift - resources moving toward the user. The third generation, the future, can be described by such phrases as "cloud computing", "open source", and red shift - resources shifting away from the user.
