June 30, 2008 - Come join a plant tour of United Enertech and see first hand a Chattanooga manufacturing company that is rapidly expanding.  United Enertech designs and manufactures commercial and industrial louvers and dampers and air control accessories for HVAC.  From a humble beginning of just 8 employees in 1998, United Enertech employs 135 today and is increasing sales at a pace of 40% per year.  United Enertech won the Fast 50 award in 2005 a s one of the fastest growing companies in Tennessee.  In 2007, United Enertech received the Hot 100 award as one of the 100 fastest growing companies in Tennessee.  There will be a presentation followed by a tour of the facilities.

 

United Enertech is located at 3005 S. Hickory St.  Traveling south on Rossville Blvd., turn left at 28th St., go 2 blocks and turn on right on S. Hickory to United Enertech on right.  If traveling north on Rossville Blvd., turn right on 31st St., go 1 block and turn left on S. Hickory to United Enertech on left.  Please enter the building on the right, under the arched awning to the right of the skywall (solarium).  The employees will be parking across the street, so there should be parking in the front of the building.  A box lunch will be available starting at 11:30 for those who reserved one.  If you would like to reserve a box lunch, call Jim Schwall at 423-752-2865 (work) or 423-267-4257 (home) by Saturday noon.

July 7, 2008 - Dr. Ron Bailey of UTC will speak on "Energy, Transportation and the Environment".

July 21, 2008 - Walt Lacey of Alstom will speak on "Power Regeneration: The Alstom Chattanooga Legacy".  Walt's presentation will range from the legacy of Combustion Engineering to the $200 m Alstom expansion that is planned for Chattanooga.  This will involve 350 new employees, maybe 80 to 100 of whom will be engineers. 

August 18 – There will be a program on the Hydrogen Tour related to  fuel cell cars.

 

LAST MEETING 

June 23, 2008 – Greg Sedrick, Director of Engineering Management and Distance Education at UTSI, spoke on “International Space Education”. 

The University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI) has created a partnership with the International Space University (ISU) in Strasbourg, France to jointly explore res earch and educational activities in space science, space engineering, systems engineering, space policy and law, business and management, and space and society. The speaker accompanied Dr. Angie Bukley, Vice President of the University of Tennessee and Chief Operating Officer of UTSI on a  visit to t he ISU Strasbourg campus in early May to plan the joint venture.  Implementation will include the design and delivery of online classes jointly taught by UTSI and ISU faculty on the peaceful exploration of space and innovative economic development resulting from exploration efforts.  Masters degrees are awarded by team rather than individually.  All 23 member nations must participate.
