A Canal That Would Have Changed the Look of Chattanooga – Gordon Phillips
In 1955 when plans for the Interstate highways were being developed, engineers were considering building a canal on the Tennessee River that would have had a profound impact on road and river traffic and on the general landscape of Chattanooga. The proposal called for the construction of a waterway that would cut across the top end of Moccasin Bend, essentially short-circuiting some five miles of river traffic and allowing I-24 a clear and straight shot from the southern end of downtown to Tiftonia. And not only would barge travel be reduced by five miles each way, but Chattanooga would have enjoyed a three-to-four foot lower flood level.
Our own Gordon Phillips will tell us about the history of those times and provide us with the details of how the canal would have been built, just how it would have changed the way Chattanooga looks today and the objections that ultimately led to the rejection of the plan.
FUTURE MEETINGS
Nov. 3 - Steve
Phillips of Signal Centers. Come see how technology and
invention increase the independence of people with limited
physical abilities.
Nov. 14 (Friday) - Kick-off meeting for the local chapter of the American Nuclear Society. This will be a joint meeting among CEC/CTC/IEEE. Theprogram will feature a panel discussion by executives representing industries, utilities and medicine having a local connection with the nuclear field.
Dec. 15
(Monday) - Extending the
smart-grid: benefits of electric sub-metering for large
commercial users Joe Gordon will speak on the concept of how
large commercial and industrial customers can use sub-metering to
better manage cost, power quality, and conserve energy.
Professional Development Hours (PDH) are available
for most meetings.
LAST
MEETING
Oct. 20 - Plant Tour of
Chattanooga Coca-Cola Bottling Company. We were treated to a
great presentation by Rusty Rouse and a tour of the fascinating
equipment and processes in the plant. Coca-cola has 93% of the
fountain drink market in Chattanooga. About $1.4 billion in
foundation money has come from owners.
Many guests were present including home-schooled children and a UTC design class.
